Kitchen Cupboard Woes

There is one reason, and one reason only that I haven't written in awhile.

I got mad.

As I previously mentioned, I was on vacation for a couple of weeks. I decided that this would be a strategic time to paint my kitchen cupboards, because I calculated the time it should take and it didn't seem like it would take up a lot of my vacation-resting time. It all went down hill from there. Actually, someone we know who paints as his profession had offered earlier in the year to paint them for us, and then he totally bailed on us. In reality, I think it went all down hill from there.

To save you from reading the totality of my heartache, suffice it to say that I prepped the doors, primed and painted, sanded them all down, primed, sanded, and now am in the process of repainting them properly. If you would like to know the details, let me know and I can blog about them. Trust me when I say that I did not go into this project blindly. If you know me, then you know that I researched the crap out of how to do this properly, including referencing the internet, "paint professionals", and people I know who have done this before. I'll let you all in on a little secret: no two sources gave me the same instructions on the "right" way to do it. What was most disheartening was the "professional" advice I was given, and I'm not talking about the apron toting hirees at the Home Depot or Rona. I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that there is no such thing as paint professionals!

While we are still in the process of completing this project (sidenote: I say "we" because I have dragged Tim into what was supposed to be my project, just to save my sanity), and there is still a truckload of obstacles that could manoever into our path, I can tell you a few tips that I have learned:

1. Just because they work at a "real" paint store, doesn't mean they know what the heck they are talking about.
2. Paint is expensive... especially when you have to buy more because they gave you the wrong kind.
3. The next time I decide to paint my cupboards, I'm going to into save up for either new doors, someone else to paint them (i.e. spray them), or a brand new kitchen all together.

Seriously though, after all of this, I will probably have a really good handle on the right way to paint now. Once we are done, I will post the way we found it worked best, and what to avoid.

And you can take it with a grain of salt, adding it to all the other opinions out there.
